About us

  • Jack, a white man with a white shirt and jeans, and chunky silver jewellery laughs at the camera

    Jack Baldus - Keys

I’ve been performing professionally since I was 16, so a long time, although my first experience of a paid gig was in an old people’s home and I got booed off by an octogenarian for being too loud. But that hasn’t stopped me so far! I’ve always loved performing - in fact after my first ever piano lesson at the age of 7, I brought round the girls from next door who I used to kick about with, and made them watch me play Old McDonald whilst wearing a makeshift cape and lighting a candelabra on top of the family piano.

I love teaching piano as well as boring people with my deep knowledge of original breaks and samples and year of release.

I spend as much of my free time in the woods with my family getting as muddy as possible!

  • Eric, a Black man with dreads pulled up behind him sits grinning at the camera wearing a waistcoat, shirt, tie and jeans

    Eric-Mylod Okafo - Lead vocals / Bass

Originally from Dublin Ireland, Eric landed in Bristol in 2010 and quickly became a busy member of the local music scene which is where he met the other members of the Soul Strutters.

And through the love of funk and soul, a band was born. The rest is uninteresting.

    Fun fact: related to Jedward.

  • Barney, a white man with mid-length brown hair and a subtle smile, glasses, white shirt and jeans

    Barney Sage - Drums

When I’m not gigging with the lads, I like making weird noises and mushrooms. If I’m ever staring into space, I’m probably thinking about riding on panspermic mushroom spores through space soundtracked by Raymond Scott.

I listen to music absurdly loud which my son loves. My wife… not so much.

  • James, a white man with a shaved head and glasses, looks to his band members wearing a white shirt and jeans

    James Arbery - Guitar

I’ve been playing guitar for over 20 years - long enough to absolutely nail the E minor pentatonic. Sadly, only a couple of our songs are in that key, so the rest of the gig is a carefully choreographed air-guitar performance disguised as musicianship.

I also teach guitar, although all of my students are significantly better than me.
